The harassment committed by supervisors at workplaces against laborers is many and severe in effect. An incident happened yesterday 6th August 2024 here in Baidoa which resulted in a massive positive response from Somalis within and abroad. A foreman for a construction site in the center of Baidoa humiliated an old woman who works there. This incident happened after a local photographer from local news media felt pity for her (about her age and physical strength) and decided to interview her at the work site.
The reporter asked the old woman “why she decided to do such a labor job at this age and weak physique”, and she replied “I know, it is hard for me to do such difficult jobs at this age and physical weakness but through this job I support my three daughters and an ailing father”, and instead of roam around town for begging, I decided to earn their living by doing such jobs”. While the reporter was interviewing her, the foreman approached her, grabbed her shoulder, and pushed forward demanding to go back to the job.
The cameraman (irritated by the foreman’s bad behavior) stood up to defend the old woman, while he was still recording the incident. The onlookers and those others who passed by rushed to the site, and they started shouting and condemning the foreman for his ill-treatment of the old man. Some others ran to the nearby police station and were informed of the incident. The police responded instantly to the call and arrived at the site, they listened to the witness’s account of the incident, and then they took the perpetrator to the police station for further interrogation.
The cameraman together with others collected the old woman from the construction site and drove her home. They did this to get first-hand information and to know more about the old woman and the living conditions she and her family lived in. What they saw in the old woman’s house was quite shocking. The house is located at the fringe of Baidoa town with no outer fence, no sufficient water, no food, and no electricity available and it is poorly furnished.

While the reporter and those accompanying him in the house, he decided to make news out of it and broadcast it through all available media sources. The story about an old woman, the condition that she and her family have gone through fascinated the social media platforms, and positive responses emerged. Massive donations of kind and in-kind were reported as the results. Her house is full of food; financial donations pour in and offers are made to construct proper housing for her and her family.
